Pacific Decadal Variability in CCSM3
Pacific Decadal Variability (PDV) is one of the main modes of variability of the climate system. Evidence for the existence of spectral peaks above a red-noise background is sparse, and a comprehensive understanding of potential resonances in the North Pacific climate system is lacking. In this presentation we show that the North Pacific climate system in the CCSM3 displays significantly enhanced energy on decadal time scales. In contrast to most hypothesis, which invoke westward propagating Rossby waves and interaction with SSTs in the KOE region to explain PDV, the mechanism responsible for the decadal peaks in CCSM3 seems to involve eastward advection of anomalies, and interaction with the eastern boundary of the North Pacific instead.
