Congratulations to Francesca Samsel (The University of Texas at Austin), Mark Petersen (Los Alamos National Laboratory), Terece Turton (The University of Texas at Austin), Gregory Abram (The University of Texas at Austin), David Rogers (Los Alamos National Laboratory) and James Ahrens (Los Alamos National Laboratory), for their recognition at Supercomputing 2015 (SC15) in Austin, Texas. The collaborative team was awarded “Best Scientific Visualization & Data Analytics Showcase” for their presentation, “Visualization of Ocean Currents and Eddies in a High-Resolution Global Ocean-Climate Model.”

Their showcase, which you can view in this Vimeo video, uses state-of-the-art visualization techniques to explore the physical processes in the ocean relevant to climate change. Climate change relies on models to better understand and predict the complex, interdependent processes that affect the atmosphere, ocean, and land. The 5-minute video describes climate modeling, the Model for Prediction Across Scales-Ocean (MPAS-Ocean), and the Accelerated Climate Modeling for Energy (ACME) project. This project exemplifies the benefits of tight collaboration among scientists, artists, computer scientists, and visualization specialists.

SC15 brings together an international community—an unparalleled ensemble of scientists, engineers, researchers, educators, programmers, system administrators and developers—to discuss timely research and the latest and greatest technologies from industry, academia and government research organization.
