NA-CORDEX-CMIP6: Current Overview and Updates in North American Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling
This presentation will provide a detailed overview of the latest developments in the second phase of the NA-CORDEX initiative, which focuses on dynamically downscaling CMIP6 simulations. CORDEX is an international effort organized by the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) to produce coordinated sets of regionally-downscaled climate projections worldwide for better understanding of local/regional climate change and variability and evaluation of downscaling models and techniques.
NA-CORDEX is the North American component of the global CORDEX initiative. The first phase of NA-CORDEX downscaled CMIP5 and has been widely used in climate impacts and adaptation studies and assessments across a broad range of topics including resource management, agriculture, ecosystems, water supply, infrastructure resilience, and more.
Here we will provide a status update on NA-CORDEX-CMIP6, including an overview of planned and completed simulations, simulation protocols and output requirements, data archiving and access plans, and information on how to contribute and/or receive updates. We will also discuss longer-term plans for including variable resolution global simulations, bias-correction, and potential further downscaling using statistical methods. In addition, we will discuss plans to better understand climate data user needs and develop use-relevant climate change indicators to better support a broad user community.
