Stephen Klein Elected 2020 AMS Fellow
Congratulations to Stephen A. Klein of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). He was recently appointed a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) at the 2020 AMS Annual Meeting in January.
“I am grateful to my colleagues for the recognition of my contributions to the field,” says Klein, who was honored with 26 other AMS members as 2020 Fellows.
Much of Klein’s work is funded under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Regional & Global Model Analysis (RGMA) program area and the Atmospheric System Research (ASR) program.
An atmospheric research scientist for more than 25 years, Klein is a member of LLNL’s Cloud Processes Research and Modeling Group under the Atmospheric, Earth and Energy Division of the Physical Life Sciences Directorate. Before joining LLNL in 2004, he was a research scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory and the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts.
Klein joined AMS as a student in the early 1990s and later served as an editor for AMS’s Journal of Climate. With more than 130 peer-reviewed papers and awards from the U.S. Department of Energy, American Geophysical Union, and LLNL to his credit, Klein today focuses his research on clouds, the role of clouds in climate change, and the representation of clouds in numerical models of the atmosphere.
Each year, new AMS Fellows are honored for exceptional scientific contributions and acknowledged for distinctions in the fields of atmospheric, or related oceanic, or hydrologic sciences. Fellows are elected at the AMS fall meeting from a slate submitted by the Fellows Committee of not more than two-tenths of 1 percent of all AMS Members.
