Description

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Biological and Environmental Research is seeking pre-applications for proposals to enhance the understanding of the Earth system by promoting a process- and system-level understanding of the modes of variability and change within the Earth system. This opportunity is sponsored by the Earth System Modeling (ESM) and Regional and Global Model Analysis (RGMA) activities.

Successful applicants will work with DOE’s Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM), either version 1 (to be released in spring 2018) or the development of versions 2 and 3. Projects working with version 1 may do so in a multi-model or hierarchical analytic study with science focused on extremes, water cycle, modes of variability and high-latitude feedbacks. Projects working with versions 2 and 3 will work with the E3SM project team to address coupled-system scientific research in polar regions, in coastal upwelling regions, over the Amazon, or tropical interannual variability; while also helping to correct associated E3SM biases.

Pre-applications are required and must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, January 16, 2018. Full proposals are due March 19, 2018.

General inquiries about these funding announcements should be directed to Dorothy Koch, Earth System Modeling Program Manager, or Renu Joseph, Regional and Global Model Analysis Program Manager.
