CICE Consortium Receives R&D 100 Award
The CICE Consortium earned a spot in the R&D World’s top 100 innovation awards for 2021 and won the Gold Medal for Corporate Social Responsibility.
Notably, this award was not just for the CICE sea ice code but for the Consortium as an organization. The Consortium was set up as an experiment in multi-agency and international cooperation to enhance our software and modeling capabilities.
CICE—also called the Los Alamos sea ice model—is a computationally efficient model for simulating the growth, melting, and movement of polar sea ice. Designed as one component of coupled atmosphere-ocean-land-ice global climate models (GCMs), today’s CICE model is the outcome of more than two decades of an effort led by scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The model’s development and maintenance have been led and coordinated by the Department of Energy (DOE) since the early 1990s.

Established in 1963, the R&D 100 Awards is the only S&T (science and technology) awards competition that recognizes new commercial products, technologies, and materials for their technological significance that are available for sale or license. The R&D 100 Awards have long been a benchmark of excellence for industry sectors as diverse as telecommunications, high-energy physics, software, manufacturing, and biotechnology.
